How You Can Help the AAC Provide HOPE for Metro Area Students

At the beginning of the year, the Atlanta Auburn Club presented Auburn University with checks totaling $40,000 in scholarship funds. This total included $14,000 for the club's Annual Scholarships to be awarded for the 2009/2010 school year, $25,000 for our Atlanta Auburn Club Endowment Fund, and an additional $1,000 for the Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Thanks to your continued support of our scholarship fundraising efforts in the 2007-2008 club years, the AAC has raised a grand total of $60,000 in scholarship funds to help metro Atlanta area students -- now and into perpetuity. It is an impressive achievement that we can all celebrate and be proud of!

While we continue to work in 2009 and beyond to raise scholarship funds, you can help us grow the AAC endowment even quicker by designating a portion of your Annual Giving donation to this fund!

If you would like more information on how you can make a donation to the AAC's 501 (c)(3) Roy B. Sewell Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc., please contact our club president, Kathleen Saal, at: communications@atlantaauburnclub.org --

Auburn University Establishes Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship

Auburn University has established an endowed scholarship in honor of Lauren Burk, the AU student who died tragically on March 4, 2008.

A graduate of Walton High School in Marietta, Burk was a freshman studying graphic design and art. She was also an active and admired member of the Delta Gamma sorority.

The scholarship will be awarded to incoming freshman students majoring in graphic design with preference given to students from Cobb County.

"As the Auburn community grieves the loss of one of its own, we are touched by the thoughtfulness of others," said Auburn University President Jay Gogue, in response to the generosity of donations in Burk's memory. "Gifts to the Lauren Ashley Burk Memorial Scholarship Endowment will be a permanent memory of Lauren's tremendous spirit."

Donations can be made online at www.develop.auburn.edu (specify Lauren Burk Scholarship Fund) or send a check payable to the Auburn University Foundation to: Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Fund, 317 South College Street, Auburn, AL 36849.

Update on Funding for the Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Atlanta Auburn Club has received word from the Auburn University Development Office that the Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Endowment has been officially endowed on the foundation side.  This means they have reached, and exceeded, the initial goal of $25K for 2008- 2009, and this excludes the funds provided by the university.

Numerous individuals have contributed throughout the year, as well as major groups and organizations. As of June 2009, there have been:

-Generous contributions from Delta Gamma Fraternity, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Delta Zeta Sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Kappa Delta Sorority, Sigma Kappa Sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, Chi Omega Sorority, Phi Mu Sorority, and Sigma Chi Fraternity.

-Several "Restaurant Days" in which certain restaurants offered to donate a percentage of sales, on specific days, to the Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Endowment fund.

-Contributions by Auburn Parents Association, CADC Student Council, the Atlanta Auburn Club, Lee County Auburn Club, and a student group that sold memorial wristbands in Lauren's memory.

New goals, as of June 8, 2009, are to reach at least $30K by the end of Summer 2009, and to reach beyond to $50K by the end of Spring 2010.

A student from Cobb County has been selected as the first recipient of the Lauren Burk Memorial Scholarship Endowment.  He is an incoming freshman at Auburn University.

AAC Scholarships Cut Tuition by Two-Thirds for Metro Atlanta Students

Every year the Atlanta Auburn Club sponsors up to three full in-state tuition scholarships, which in 2006 amounted to $5,265 per student. This amount makes a big difference to families from the state of Georgia, because Auburn’s out-of-state tuition is three times higher than in-state tuition. If an Auburn student receives scholarship funds through the university that are equal to or greater than the cost of in-state tuition, the university waives a full third of the cost of out-of-state tuition. In other words, an AAC Scholarship award of $5,265 may save an Auburn family more than $10,000 in out-of-state tuition costs in a given year. Currently, out-of-state tuition costs about $15,000.

AAC scholarship recipients are selected by the Auburn University Scholarship Office. Winners are chosen in accordance with criteria stated in the Atlanta Club’s scholarship agreement. For more information on the AAC Scholarship criteria or to receive information on how to apply, please contact Toni Littleton-Rich at TLL0008@auburn.eduToni is the Scholarship/Awards Coordinator for the AAC and is ready to answer your questions about Auburn scholarships.

This site offers information on all Auburn scholarship types, the process, a calendar, guidelines on applying and links to related offices and organizations, as well as a page offering scholarship forms and documents online.

AAC Recognized by The 1856 Society

The Atlanta Auburn Club has been recognized by The 1856 Society for cumulative scholarship contributions of $100,000 and above. The 1856 Society is named for the year in which the East Alabama Male College (now Auburn University) was established. Although membership induction into the 1856 Society is reserved solely for individuals, Auburn University and the Auburn Foundation also honor organizational donors whose contributions reach a specific gift level.
